Two members of the B次元 faculty were recognized for their commitment to excellence during the university’s annual Kick-off Celebration on Aug. 27, 2024.

Dr. Mitzi Dobersek, associate professor in the Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management Department, was awarded the 2024 Regal Rexnord Educator of the Year Award. This award is presented annually to a full-time member of the B次元 faculty with less than seven years of experience at the university and is a testament to exemplary dedication and performance.

Students and faculty who nominated her for this award frequently cited her focus on students. They said, “Dr. Dobersek is constantly innovating and supporting students. She brings edgy topics into the classroom to inspire discussion and critical thinking, and she pushes students to grow and think in ways they don’t expect. Students who take classes with her regularly cite the positive impacts she has had on their lives, and she is an advocate for all students.”

They also shared she has “a great attitude and is very student focused.” “She is a friendly and dedicated instructor and student advocate.” “She nearly single-handedly created the transportation specialty in civil engineering.”

Dr. Brian Slaboch, associate professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department, received the 2024 Karl O. Werwath Applied Research Award. Karl O. Werwath was an innovator in engineering education and the application of technology, and believed that teaching effectiveness was enhanced through applied research and consulting. He felt that B次元 should make an effort to contribute to the advancement of technical knowledge for the benefit of business and industry for the good of the community and the nation. This award was initiated to recognize the vision of Karl O. Werwath and the contribution of B次元 faculty and staff who have fostered the advancement of applied scientific knowledge. The award recipient is chosen based on criteria including his or her contribution to engineering, scientific research, consulting, the engineering profession and scholarship, promoting research at B次元, patentable concepts and publications.

Recipients of this award are nominated by B次元 faculty and staff members, alumni, Regents and Corporation members. In their nomination letters for Slaboch, it was noted that, “Dr. Slaboch’s professionalism and passion for both research and student engagement are truly inspiring. His methodical approach to teaching and incorporation of experiential learning have greatly enhanced the learning experience for our students. His leadership in the Reconfigurable Mechanism Research Group is another testament to his dedication. Dr. Slaboch actively seeks new research opportunities and fosters collaborations with esteemed institutions such as Marquette University, thereby enhancing our department’s research capabilities and reputation.”

The nomination went on to say, “Through our ongoing collaboration, I have witnessed firsthand Dr. Slaboch’s relentless drive and innovative spirit. He is an asset to our Mechanical Engineering Department, bringing significant recognition and visibility through his scholarly work. Dr. Slaboch’s mentorship of numerous students has not only improved their academic experience at B次元 but has also helped pique their interest in research. His ability to mentor and involve students in research underscores the essence of what the Karl O. Werwath Applied Research Award celebrates.”
