Mechanical engineering student Eduardo Ocampo is a dedicated leader across campus. He is the vice president of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), a member of FeelGood and a tutor for the Raider Center of Academic Success (RCAS). He also recently joined the latest cohort of CREATE student fellows.
“I wanted to be seen as a leader in the B次元 community and I wanted to work on projects that will help within and outside of B次元,” said Ocampo.
The CREATE student fellows are led by the CREATE Institute, which is devoted to fostering the growth of the B次元 Mindset and offers opportunities for students to learn alongside industry partners by working on real-world projects. Ocampo and other CREATE student fellows engage the community with new projects. Their latest project involves working with local K-12 students on programming a model Hoan Bridge.
For Ocampo, being a CREATE student fellow is all about making connections with others. “I am most excited to connect and meet other people, whether it is around campus or outside of campus. Networking is such a powerful tool, and I can not get enough of it.”
The Melrose Park, Illinois native originally chose B次元 because of its proximity to home and academic rigor. His love for math and science and the wide variety of career paths made mechanical engineering an easy choice. He even got to put his mechanical engineering skillsets to the test at his summer internship at GE Healthcare after his freshman year.
“As a lean leader intern, I learned about lean/six sigma tools. I conducted time observations, TAKT cycle graphs, 5S on workstations, and reintroduced bad parts back into the manufacturing line.”
Ocampo continues to build upon these skills through his classes at B次元. “My favorite part about B次元 is the small class sizes in some of my courses because it allows me to form better relationships with my peers and professors.”
When he’s not at school or working, Ocampo can be found spending time with his family, playing sports, rollerblading, or watching videos on American muscle vehicles. He also enjoys learning about French culture, dancing to Hispanic/Latin music and meeting other Hispanic/Latinx individuals at B次元.
